Macular Degeneration FAQs

Macular degeneration, also referred to as age-related macular degeneration, is an eye condition that causes vision impairment. It's caused by the deterioration of the macula, which is centrally located in the retina. This can lead to central vision impairment if not detected early. At Sylvan Eye Assoc. in Modesto, CA, our optometrist diagnoses and treats macular degeneration. Here are some commonly asked questions about the condition.

.

What Are the Symptoms of Macular Degeneration?

There are signs you should be aware of that could indicate that you have macular degeneration. If you notice any of these, contact our optometrist immediately.

  • Straight lines appear wavy
  • Blurry vision
  • Color perception is distorted
  • Difficulty recognizing faces
  • Fine print is challenging to read

What Causes Macular Degeneration?

There is not one specific cause of macular degeneration. However, certain individuals are considered higher risk than others. This group includes people over 65 or those with a previous family history of the disease. Also, your lifestyle can be linked to the onset of the disease. Obesity, smoking, or high blood pressure may contribute to the development of macular degeneration.

What Are the Types of Macular Degermation?

  • Dry Macular Degeneration: This form of the disease is the most common, making up nearly 4 out of 5 cases. It happens over time as the tissues in the macula breakdown, leading to vision complications.
  • Wet Macular Degeneration: This form is less common but is far more dangerous. It occurs when atypical blood vessels grow under the retina, which can leak fluid and cause severe damage to the retina.

Is Macular Degeneration Curable?

There isn't a cure currently for macular degeneration, but the disease can be slowed down and managed. Our optometrist will diagnose your condition and provide the right treatment methods for you. This can include a change in nutrition and lifestyle, medications, vitamins, or other aids that can help make up for the loss of your central vision.

Why Are Routine Eye Exams Important?

Many people with macular degeneration don't even realize they have it. It may be months before noticeable symptoms occur. With regular eye exams, our optometrist can diagnose this condition early and provide treatment to stop vision loss. If you're at a higher risk because of age or other factors, comprehensive eye exams are crucial.
